Hi! I am Jennycel Timol from the Southern part of the Philippines. I am fortunate to belong to an indigenous tribe called B'laan. Until now, we practice ancient cultural traditions such as cultural dance and wearing tribal clothing.
I have six siblings, my parents only completed elementary school, and work for wages below the minimum.

Due to our family's financial insecurity, I was forced to work when I was 12 years old as a household helper and babysitter for different families to survive and become an independent person to pursue my education and life goals.

At the age of 12, I also made an extremely life-changing decision to dishonor my family by refusing to marry a close relative through arranged marriage.

At the age of 12, I also made an extremely life-changing decision to dishonor my family by refusing to marry a close relative through arranged marriage.
I ran away twice just to get rid of the arranged marriage culture. After years of feeling lost, I found solace and purpose when I received the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 2016. A year after becoming a member, I prepared to be a voluntary Missionary for 18 months.
My life has not been easy. However, I am blessed with God's mercy and love.

In April 2022, I moved to Hawai'i to pursue my education, bringing with me not only my dreams and hopes for myself but also for my whole family and tribe. However, it was not easy.
Navigating life as an international student presented a series of challenges such as a new language and culture shock.
English is not only my first or second
In April 2022, I moved to Hawai'i to pursue my education, bringing with me not only my dreams and hopes for myself but also for my whole family and tribe. However, it was not easy.
Navigating life as an international student presented a series of challenges such as a new language and culture shock.
English is not only my first or second language; it is my fifth. Consequently, this significantly impacted my academic pursuits and social interactions. Despite these hurdles, I remained steadfast in my commitment to overcoming linguistic obstacles. I steadily enhanced my proficiency through dedicated language study and immersive experiences, gradually bridging the gap between language differences and effective communication.
In addition to language barriers, the transition to a new cultural environment brought forth moments of profound culture shock. Even though diversity is celebrated at the university, I initially struggled to feel a sense of belonging due to differences in backgrounds and cultural upbringings, hindering my ability to connect with others. However, I learned to appreciate differences and form friendships by socializing with others, and these connections have provided invaluable support, enriching my college experience and fostering personal growth.

My Cooking Skills
As a culinary enthusiast, I enjoy creating and savoring delicious dishes. One of my all-time favorites is Pork Adobo and Chicken Spicy Adobo. These recipes hold a special place in my heart as they remind me of the lovingly prepared meals by my mother, who has mastered the art of infusing flavors and tenderness into every bite.
My Adventure
Hiking serves as my gateway to adventure and serenity. Among my memorable escapades, Pali Highway stands out as a testament to perseverance, where each step challenged my limits, yet rewarded me with breathtaking vistas. Recently, conquering Crouching Lion left me in awe of nature's grandeur, its steep ascent leading to a panoramic view that etched itself into my memory. During the Haula Loop hike, the discovery of guava berries added a delightful twist to the journey, reminding me of nature's bountiful surprises waiting to be explored.
My Pastime
Cinema is my portal to diverse worlds and narratives that captivate and inspire me. Currently, my fascination with Fantasy genre led me to "Alien Revolution," where the storyline defies stereotypes, showcasing the complexity of extraterrestrial beings. As an avid hiker, the documentary "Hiker Murderer" resonates with my current interest, offering insights into the world of hiking while unraveling a gripping narrative. Eagerly anticipating "Rewind," a Filipino film that promises a poignant exploration of family dynamics and the passage of time, I'm drawn to its compelling themes that echo the importance of cherishing every moment.
